India’s Covaxin to neutralize ‘617’ COVID-19 variants says Dr Fauci

Home grown COVID-19 vaccine from India has found to be neutralizing 617 variant of coronavirus according to the chief medical adviser of White House and also a pandemic expert Dr. Anthony Fauci.
While taking to the reporters, Fauci has said in a conference, “This is something where we’re still gaining data on a daily basis. But the most recent data, was looking at convalescent Sera of COVID-19 cases and people who received the vaccine used in India, the Covaxin. It was found to neutralise the 617 variants”

Later on, he has also added “So, despite the real difficulty that we’re seeing in India, vaccination could be a very, very important antidote against this”
The New York Times has reported that Covaxin works with the motive to create antibodies against the coronavirus with the help of the immune system. Generally, antibodies attach itself with the virus protein like the spike protein.
Bharat Biotech has developed the vaccine in collaboration with the National Institute of Virology and Indian Council of Medical Research. From 3rd January, Covaxin has been approved for emergency use. Later on, third stage trial of the vaccine has showcased the efficacy of 78%.

Replying to one of the questions, White House COVID-19 Response Senior Advisor Dr Andy Slavitt has said that Center for Disease Control and Prevention has sent a team to India in order to help in the process of response coordination. He has also said, “We are making sure that we are locating some of the raw materials necessary to create more vaccines in India, which I think is going to be an important help there.”
Further, Slavitt has said “We stand with the country of India during this very trying and tragic surge. We are working to deploy resources and supplies, including therapeutics, rapid testing kits, ventilators, PPE, and raw materials, that are needed to manufacture vaccines in India, and the CDC, which has a long history of working with and in India on public health measures, will be deploying a strike team to the country to support the public health efforts there.”

On the occasion, it is also said that United States of America is going to share AstraZeneca vaccines as soon as it becomes available. 60 millions may be sent in two months.
Slavitt has also said, “The AstraZeneca vaccine is highly safe and effective, and approved in many parts of the world, and since it is not approved for use in the US, we do not need to use the AstraZeneca vaccine here during the next few months. We have sufficient supply of vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson to accommodate our needs in the US”
